cmyk-rgbOne thing that you’ll need to know if you’re going to be designing, is how the colors that you see on your computer screen differ from the colors that will print out on your (or anyone else’s) printer.

There are three color modes that we’re going to talk about. The first one is easy, it’s called Grayscale. Basically, this color mode is black with all variations of gray. No color. The next two are important.

help_bad_stretchedIf you have yet to do so, read my article about resolution, in which I covered re-sizing images, a topic that has everything to do with aspect ratio. One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing fun-house mirror pictures.

If you’re doing an ad for a fun house, circus or the county fair, this might be acceptable.

This is one of the fundamentals of graphic design and a very important part of maintaining a great relationship with your printer! Resolution.

Resolution is the degree of sharpness of a computer-generated image as measured by the number of dots per linear inch in a hard-copy printout or the number of pixels across and down on a display screen. That’s the textbook definition. Basically, resolution means how sharp or blurry your picture is. If you have a high-resolution picture, your picture will be sharp and clear.

mailmanDistribution is yet another service that a client of yours may need. And you thought you were just an artist…

After a client finishes a design with you, and they have their print order completed, they may want some help (or ideas of what to do) in getting their order out to their target audience.

I decided to write this article because lately I’ve gotten several requests for writing copy for various materials such as brochures, flyers, taglines, etc. I’ve always followed my own personal rule of no proofreading and no text creation.

I figured it wasn’t my job, and I didn’t want to be held liable for typos or text revisions. But I soon realized that I was loosing money and turning away from a profitable service. Now, if you’re like me and you’re a designer that doesn’t like to write copy, this would be the perfect time for collaboration!

brainstormThe best way to get any idea off the ground is to gather a group of people involved in your project and brainstorm. Brainstorming is simply a spontaneous group discussion to produce ideas and ways of solving problems.

It’s important to start with someone being a moderator.

logopond.com As I’ve often said before, logos are probably the No.1 thing that I get asked to do by my new clients. Creating great logos is an important skill to master, simply because most business marketing revolves around it.

There are many directions you can take with logo design as there are people that need logos.

Of course, the basics are no typos or grammatical errors, but what else will help your resume compete … Find a way to stand out Strong typography, a layout specific to the job or target audience of the business might be helpful.

Something crisp and clean can also be an option. I applied for a clothing catalog once and made a resume that looked like a clothing catalog. Skills were listed like clothing descriptions above the prices, etc. ... Research the company you’re apply for No business wants to get a form letter.
