Most people’s experience with surrealism is limited to seeing a few of Salvador Dali’s works in high school art class, but many artists and graphic designers have tackled surrealism over the years. On its face, surrealism appears to be design that is quirky, weird or odd; but the truth is that surrealism is based in deep values and beliefs, incorporates symbolism (though it is often ambiguous), and is often even simultaneously poetic and political. At its root, surrealism is philosophical by definition. Still, it’s the unexpected visual impact that draws so many of the mass public to surrealism, and interpreting any work might be impossible without some knowledge of the designer’s intent.
