Mary Shelley’s immortal tale of Dr. Frankenstein’s monster – whom we now just call Frankenstein – gave us one of the most beloved characters in horror history. Though a meeting with the monster wouldn’t necessarily be pleasant, advertisers have for years found fun and creative ways to use Frankenstein to sell their products. Since August 30 was Frankenstein Day (seriously), I thought it’d be fun to list some of my favorite commercials that feature Frankenstein.
We know Frankenstein has a green thumb, but Frankenstein as a loving flower-tending gardener?
I dig it when Frank turns to the camera with a sly grin. Also notice the heel kick at the end.
This old Bic commercial depicts Frankie busting out of ice, then using his “ice pick” (a Bic pen) to write a letter. I wish they were still only 19 cents!
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
The re-enactment of when Frankenstein invented the flavor combination of chocolate and peanut butter.
Howie Long and Teri Hatcher as Frankenstein and his bride? Only outdone by Frank doing the Mambo with “two left feet.”
OK, this commercial is so wrong on so many levels (Frankenstein licking the TV, for one), but I like it because it reminds me of commercials when I was a kid … when fast food chains were trying to compete with McDonald’s for the title of King of the Kiddie Prize.
When I was a kid I my parents refused to buy me a Teddy Ruxpin. Oh, how I thank them today.
Before MTV sold out to the reality bandwagon, it used to have branded mini-commercials between its music videos. This was a personal favorite.
