As a freelancer, it can sometimes feel like you are all alone, slaving away in your home office with little connection to the real world. It is tough to get your client's work done and still find time to search for new business and stay on top of industry trends. The self-employed lifestyle doesn't have to be that way. Joining industry clubs and associations is one way to not only feel more connected to your peers, but also to find jobs, speakers, events and competitions related to your niche or industry. There are all kinds of clubs and associations out there. Many of the national groups also have local or state chapters where you can network with a more tight-knit group of individuals all working in the same state or city. Below are lists of leading clubs and membership organizations for marketers, designers and copywriters. Each group or association has a lot to offer. For marketers:

Direct Marketing Association (DMA) www.the-dma.org A membership organization for businesses and nonprofits doing direct marketing across multiple channels. American Marketing Association (AMA) www.marketingpower.com The largest marketing association in North America with nearly 40,000 members across many industries. Business Marketing Association (BMA) www.marketing.org Has more than 80 years of collective history and expertise in business-to-business marketing.

For designers:

AIGA The Professional Association for Design www.aiga.org A nonprofit founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and now a professional association for design with 22,000 members nationwide. The Art Directors Club (ADC) www.adcglobal.org This global nonprofit membership organization is dedicated to connecting creative and communications professionals. Graphic Artists Guild www.graphicartistsguild.org A national union that represents the best legal interests of freelance designers and other creatives.

For copywriters:

The Association of Professional Freelance Copywriters www.aopfc.com An application-based organization that accredits experienced copywriters to give them more job opportunities and job stability. American Writers and Artists Inc. (AWAI) www.awaionline.com A membership organization offering education and professional resources to help individuals achieve financial security and independence as professional copywriters.
