When the holiday season comes around, clients and friends expect a more personal touch than just a text message or an e-mail message saying "happy holidays." If you think about it, the holidays are like a marketing "freebie" where it's expected that you will reach out to the important people in your client-base and personal life.

Smart business owners will take advantage of this opportunity and craft a custom Christmas, Hanukkah or holiday card that shows clients and friends alike how valued they are. For Christmas and holiday cards that stand out check out these two ideas below: A Christmas postcard A postcard can be a hip, casual way to share holiday greetings. Less formal than its holiday card cousin, the postcard delivers a quicker impression and is great for showcasing humorous messages and thought-provoking images. Sending a standard sized postcard (6-inch by 4.25-inch) means you'll only have to spend 28 cents per piece, much less than first-class mail. To keep the design fresh, try using mostly black and white or grayscale in your design and highlighting just two colors, such as green and red for a Christmas message or blue and white for a Hanukkah card. Postcards are also great vehicles for antique or vintage-style images. For inspiration search Google images for "1950s Christmas advertisements." Custom Christmas cards Make a traditional greeting card plus envelope stand out by using special printing techniques such as die cuts and foil stamping. Die cuts are like cookie-cutter shapes that you can select from pre-made dies or create from scratch yourself. Trim the entire outside edge of your card so that it looks like a star, a Christmas tree or a present. Or you could use the die to cut out a shape in the front of the card and let the design from the inside peek through a bit. Foil stamping, or adding a thin layer of metallic paper to your design, is perfect for the holidays. You can make stars, snow, light, candles, halos and all kinds of Christmas and Hanukkah-themed objects really shine with a foil stamp treatment.
