In honor of the Maker Faire this weekend, and all the DIY, crafty, garage-born businesses that will be selling wares, I’d like to take a moment to talk about stickers. Yes, stickers. Stickers are your friend. Conventional business cards are trimmed out with straight blades so it’s easiest and least expensive to create a card with sharp 90 degree corners. A die-cut business card is one that uses a specially created die to cut a nonlinear shape — this includes rounded corners, cutting a silhouette shape in the center of the card, cutting notches and shapes out of the edges of the card, or making the card itself an irregular shape. Since today is Bike to Work Day I thought it would be a good moment to take a look at some fun posters, invitations and ephemera using bikes. When you’re 5 any old piece of construction paper with crayon all over it makes a great Mother’s Day gift. Maybe at this point in your life a little more effort is required Moms can be a little difficult to decipher, though. They don’t want to come out and say what they like — the thought is enough; whatever you do is great.

With Cinco de Mayo fast approaching it seemed like a good time to look at traditional Mexican motifs as a jumping off point for inspiration. Any of these themes can be mined for invitations and party decorations for your Cinco de Mayo celebration. Similarly, if you’re designing materials for a Mexican themed event or for a business with some Mexican heritage, using historical styles and cultural references can help to make the connection for your audience. 1.

They say, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity.” I think the real kernel of thought to take away from that statement is, “It’s never a bad thing to be memorable.” Some of the best advertising and marketing ideas come from companies that were willing to zig when everyone else in their industry was zagging. To that point, unless you’re as big as Nike or Coca-Cola one of the first impressions people will have of your business may very well be from your business card (which you will presumably hand out like candy). Your business card can be a significant way to be remembered.
