Happy Birthday, Golden Gate Bridge!

May 16, 2012

On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was officially opened for public access. The bridge turns 75 in 2012, and in its 75 years has become an internationally recognized symbol for San Francisco, California, and the United States. But more than that, the Golden Gate Bridge is an incredible example of the power of the human mind to achieve a certain nirvana in both form and function. As such, the Golden Gate Bridge is unequivocally aligned with graphic design: done right, both are beautiful, and both exist for a purpose beyond beauty. The Golden Gate Bridge is beautiful, but its purpose is to connect the people (and economies) of San Francisco and Marin counties. Graphic design can certainly be beautiful, but its purpose is often to motivate purchases. The Golden Gate Bridge, with its surrounding scenery, misty fog, sunsets above and waves below, makes nearly every photo taken of it a work of art in and of itself. That's why crafting designs that are even more brilliant is such a challenge. In recognition of the men who envisioned, designed and built her, let's wish the Golden Gate Bridge a happy 75th birthday by finding inspiration in the following designs. Golden Gate Sunset by Tior
