5 Reasons to Start Your Christmas Marketing Today

November 11, 2012

Many small business retailers wait until the last minute to begin planning their holiday marketing campaigns, but doing so puts you at a distinct disadvantage when it comes time for customers to open their wallets for Christmas purchases. When you plan ahead, you can beat your competition to the punch, launch better campaigns ideal for yielding excellent return on investment, and break your own Christmas sales records year after year. The following illustrates why you should start your Christmas marketing today.

1.  Christmas sales are the most important

Many retailers report that Christmas accounts for a significant portion – or even the majority – of their total annual profits. That means Christmas is the most important sales season for retailers, and you should place importance on your Christmas marketing efforts accordingly. If Christmas sales account for 50 percent of your total sales, shouldn’t you spend 50 percent of your marketing efforts preparing for it?

2.  Market first

When you begin planning and printing Christmas marketing materials early, you can be the first retailer to reach your customers. Beat the Black Friday sales by sending a Christmas catalog or postcard via direct mail. Remember, the early bird gets the worm.

3.  Increase Christmas ROI

When you have more time you plan your Christmas marketing campaigns, you can conduct more detailed customer research, create better-targeted posters, flyers, catalogs, postcards, and web pages, and highly-targeted mailing lists. All of this leads to increased return on investment and overall profits.

4.  More time to market

Plan early, and you can expose your Christmas products, services, and special offers to potential customers several times and in several different ways. You can mail a catalog, followed by a sales letter, followed by a postcard, for example. Add in newspaper flyer marketing and online and mobile advertising, and when it’s time for customers to buy you’ll be the first place they go.

5.  Enjoy Christmas

Instead of scrambling at the last minute, you can relax and enjoy the holiday season knowing your marketing efforts are geared for outstanding profits this year. After all, isn’t time with family and friends the reason you’re working so hard in the first place?
