Let’s get crazy: Exploring your ideas

March 19, 2009

Have you ever had a great idea, only to be heartbroken when your friends shot it down as being crazy, stupid or unsalable? Don't be discouraged — there are plenty of “crazy” ideas that have made millions! Take the Million Dollar Home Page, for example. Someone sold 1 million pixels of advertising space for $1 a crack — and made a million dollars. Or how about picking up dog poop for a living? Maybe you'd like some stuffed roadkill? Yes, crazy people are everywhere — crazy entrepreneurs with crazy ideas, and crazy buyers with crazy tastes. And there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's the crazy ones that seem to do better — they identify untapped niches, face no competition and get a lot of press for their crazy ideas. Maybe they're not so crazy after all. How about the guy who sends Santa letters to kids? The lady who decided to sell diapers online? The man who envisioned computers in every home (also known as Bill Gates)? Crazy people who have made a crazy amount of money. Before you go getting committed, you should keep in mind that crazy people with crazy ideas are not insane. They have an intelligent decision-making process and take calculated risks. Success doesn't come without hard work, no matter how great the idea is. The concept of being successfully crazy isn't limited to big business ideas — it's there when managers give employees the rewards they really desire, when marketing teams reach out to new audiences, when cashiers toss in their own pennies when customers are short. Anyone can play by the rules and achieve success. It's those who push the envelope with care and finesse — and break a few rules — who lead the pack. What are your crazy ideas?
