A Peek Inside 2 Designers’ Home Offices

It's always fun to get a sneak peek at other designers' home offices. We ran a similar post back in July, featuring a look at three home offices and one agency. Here is an inside look at two more home offices along with quick mini-interviews with the designers about their workspace and working style. Home office No. 1 Peter Berkley, art director and principal, Belle Creative www.belle-creative.com

How long have you been working in this space? PB: Three years. What is the key to successfully working at home with your partner Sarah McKay Berkley, creative director? PB : Always making room in the schedule for personal time and living time. What are three words that describe your workspace or working style? PB: Playful, integrated and organized.

Coffee, tea, Redbull or none of the above? PB: Coffee, french pressed and strong.

Do you meet with clients here, or is this space "just for you?" PB: Just for me — local coffee shops serve as the meeting space. What's your favorite item on your desk and why? PB: Whatever recent drawing my 4-year-old daughter has placed on it.  Nothing gets my creative juices flowing more than seeing a wonderful bit of art that's so perfect and carefree.

What do you do to make your space "inspirational?" PB: I'm surrounded by our living area, including where my daughter plays — that's always inspiring.  As well, I have the piano and other musical instruments nearby I can play around with.  I even often have the TV on with some old movie playing while I work.  At pretty much all times, though, I play music — highly inspiring.

Is there a gadget or piece of software you can't live without? PB: My little Flip HD video camera. Do you ever fantasize about having a really fancy office chair? What kind would you buy with unlimited funds? PB: I don't need a chair because I stand while working (though occasionally rest on a stool) it keeps me moving and feeling active while working. What would you change if you could, or what's your least favorite thing about the space? PB: Being visible to every solicitor that comes to the door — there's no hiding . . . Do you have anything to add about your workspace? PB: I find that having a workspace right in the middle of our living space allows me to integrate my work life and personal life in very positive ways — making work seem less like "work."

How long have you been working in this space? Evan Campisi: 3.5 years. What are three words that describe your workspace or working style? EC: Neat and Neat!

Coffee, tea, Redbull, or none of the above? EC: Coffee. Do you meet with clients here, or is this "just for you?" EC: This is a just-for-me space. What's your favorite item in your office and why: EC: The ever-rotating bulletin board. It's very clean right now. Time to fill it up with new stuff. What do you do to make your space "inspirational?" EC: The most important thing for me is keeping this space tidy. I can't focus if there is lots of clutter around me. Is there a gadget or software you can't live without: EC: Google Reader. It has totally changed my daily reading routines. Do you ever fantasize about having a really fancy office chair? What kind would you buy funds unlimited? EC: I have a pretty fancy chair right now, but it was designed to destroy your back. I would love to get the Herman Miller Embody chair. It's a lot cooler looking than the standard Aeron chair. What would you change if you could, or what's your least favorite thing about the space? EC: There are no windows here and the lack of natural light can be a bit depressing sometimes. I've invested in some special light bulbs though to mimic natural light. They were developed in Sweden, I think, to keep people sane during the dark winters.
