The fruitcake is universally derided as a gift for when you care enough to give the very least. Gummy in texture and cloying in taste, fruitcake is better suited as a doorstop than a dessert. However, it’s also a popular symbol of Christmas, and it even has its own holiday. Today, Dec. 27, is National Fruitcake Day, and the tradition is to eat a slice or pass your fruitcake on to someone else.
